Russia’s Third Capital
Kazan isn’t only Russia’s Third Capital it’s also considered the Sports Capital of Russia. Over the last several years a number of sports events have taken place here, the FINA World Championship just recently wrapped up, and in 2013 the Universiades were held in Kazan. The city has also been chosen as one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup in 2018. But Kazan isn’t just a city for sports.
Living in Harmony
It has a history too! In 2005 it celebrated it’s one thousand years of existence with the opening of the millennial bridge that crosses the Kazanka river. It’s from here one can see the amazing kremlim that houses the Qolşärif Mosque and Annunciation Cathedral. It’s one of the few rare places on planet earth were Muslims and Christians live side by side in harmony. Another wonderful building that lies within the walls of the Kremlin is the Spasskaya Tower. The story of the tower is quite amazing, read more about it here. Coming to Kazan also opens up the possibility to visit many beautiful sites just outside the city, places like Raifa Monastery, Bolgar, and Sviyazhsk island. They are all within a couple of hours of the city. You can read about them here, here, and here.
