Quotes by Famous Russians – Mikhail Lermontov

Я был готов люби́ть весь мир,

меня́ никто́ не по́нял:

и я вы́учился ненави́деть.

I was ready to love the world,

but no one understood me,

so I learned to hate.

  1. Nice quote. Interestingly, they say that Lermontov was of Scottish descent, from Learmont outside Edinburgh if memory serves me correctly. The huge Scottish diaspora in Poland and Russia from the Miodle Ages onwards is very little known in Western Europe.

  2. You could be related to Lermontov! The only book I’ve ever come across which deals with this Scottish diaspora is a book called Black Sea by Neal Ascherson, which is a real gem.
