Kizhi Pogost

The pogost of Kizhi (i.e. the Kizhi enclosure) is located on one of the many islands in Lake Onega, in Karelia. It includes two beautiful 18th-century wooden churches and an octagonal bell tower, also of wood, which was built in 1862. The jewel of its architecture is the 22-domed Transfiguration Church with a large iconostasis—a wooden screen covered with religious portraits. The roofs were made of spruce planks and the domes are covered in aspen. The design of this elaborate superstructure also provided an efficient system of ventilation to preserve the structure from decay. This massive church is about 37 meters tall and

The Church of St. Nicholas in the parish Maloshuyskom

The Church of St. Nicholas is located in the churchyard Maloshuyskogo, once located near the mouth of the river Maloshuika, which flows into the White Sea. Time of occurrence of this parish just until set, but, presumably, it’s been since the end of XVI – early XVII century. This conclusion leads to the text of the letters from the Metropolitan of Novgorod and Velikolutskogo Affoniya to the abbot of the monastery Kozheozerskogo Jonah (28 February 1638). It abbot prescribed “to build a new wooden church in honor of St. Nicholas, on the site of the burned church in honor of the same saint, in the parish Suika belonging to the monastery” [1]. Thus, even before that time on the site of the temple there was some preserved wooden church. Unfortunately could not find information about the time of its construction and appearance.
